A roomful of inebriated Glaswegians is always lively. So imagine how rowdy a Glaswegian hen party is. Anyone who knows anything about Sam Bradley could instantly see the possibilities for hilarity when he’s put in a room with a hen party and he really did deliver! He interrupted their celebrations and invited the bride-to-be onstage to sing to her, to cheers from her friends. Luckily nearly everyone got Sam’s sense of humour when he serenaded her with Woman You Crazy.
Sam was his usual energetic, edgy, intense and hilarious self, meaning anyone who didn’t know who he was looked nervous and unsure whether to laugh while fans were laughing and enjoying the bonus comedy with the fantastic music. Some of the songs might be fun but that doesn’t detract from the power of his voice. In fact, the jokes in between numbers only accentuate how good Sam is as a musician. He gets a room going, with laughter, but mostly with awe when he lets loose and sings something like 'Lights'. All round, he’s a brilliantly unique performer.
There's no doubt that Sam leaves his audience wanting more and vowing to go back to see him play again as soon as they can. Surely there’s no greater compliment or testimony than that.
The Nice ‘n Sleazy’s venue downstairs was
an intimate room with plenty of space for an ample crowd. The place filled up pretty quickly and it
soon became clear that tonight’s audience were going to be energetic, vocal and
that there would be no room for ballads on this set list. The audience were
talkative and the place was buzzing especially with the addition of a hen party
,who sat at the back of the room, yet made their presence clear from the onset.
From the get go, after introducing himself
as Sam Bradley with a spot on his chest, Sam drew the audience in and what
better way to engage an audience but to invite the hen up to the stage for an
extra special rendition of ‘Woman You Crazy’.
The males in the room were particularly
amused and entertained by both Sam’s escapades and tales of what inspired him
to write ‘Passport’ and everyone thoroughly
enjoyed the lyrics of ‘Soho Whores’, joining Sam in a chorus of “Don’t tell the wife”.
In between songs Sam was hilarious as
usual, even treating us to a few bars of R Kelly’s “Bump N’ Grind” proving that
he has great... ahem...’moves’. He kept the crowd riveted, laughing and
singing along for the whole time he was on stage and had them more than geared
up for the headline act, Ryan Keen, with the cries of “I say Ryan Keen, you say
Sam Bradley” 10/10 for marketing!
It was evident by the end of the set that
the cheers in the room proved that we’d all thoroughly enjoyed Sam’s
performance and would have welcomed more.
Collectively between us we’ve attended 10
gigs of Sam’s over the last 16 months and we both agreed that tonight’s was by
far the best we’ve seen from Sam yet; not only for his musical talent but also
for his skill and ability to capture the audience’s attention and maintain it
throughout his set. Newcastle and
Glasgow were two very different gigs and Sam delivered perfectly on each
occasion. We cannot wait for the EP
release in May and are certain that if Sam’s reception on this tour is anything
to go by, he will be a well deserved headlining act in the UK in no time.
Sam’s musical/comedy show continued last night in Newcastle at the trendy venue, O2 Academy (part of the Academy Music Group.
Another talent was discovered when Sam recited an excerpt from Charles Manson’s speech from NBC’s 1987 interview. His oration/performance of this was almost as impressive as his musical skills, making us think a career on the "dramatic stage" can also be on this young man's horizon.
Video of Manson's speech can be found here at the 3 min mark.
************************************************************************************* Another Fan Report from Newcastle! by: Geordiechick1 and AAAMcD
Having seen Sam Bradley several times in London during the last year, we were extremely excited at the prospect of him playing at venues further North as per our frequent requests.
Friday night Newcastle – Since becoming fans of Sam, our kids have naturally become accustomed to hearing Sam’s dulcet tones and harmonies, having forced our musical influences down their throats all of their lives. They themselves have since become fans of Sam’s by proxy, so we were really excited to be able to take them to a local gig. Swedish House Mafia who?
Joel was first up with his set, warming the audience nicely, followed swiftly by Sam who performed a combination of upbeat tracks and ballads and received a warm reception from a crowd of serious gig goers who were there to appreciate real live talent. Appreciate they certainly did, as was evident by the queue to meet Sam afterwards and to buy his CD’s.
double your fun
Speaking with Sam after the gig, he told us the general feedback from the tour so far was very positive, and when commenting on his humorous interaction with the audience, he joked that he had been asked whether he was “a funny singer or a comedian who sings!”
Verdict from our teenage boys?........ “Totally awesome!”
Unconventional best sums up last night. From the set list delivered on a paper plate to his self-reprimanding humour, Sam Bradley entertains.
SET LIST
From the moment he opened with 'Science Prevents Me' the charisma, charm and banter started immediately. From trying to beckon the crowd forward, to his witty remarks during his set and reference to himself as a ‘Southern fairy’, the Preston crowd was quickly won over. Laughing along, quite uncontrollably, and then settling back down to be mesmerised by Sam’s powerful vocals and strong stage presence.
There were problems with his tuner, commotions back stage (literally clash and banging behind the curtains!), but nothing swayed Sam. Even though he is quite hesitant before he tells the crowd a story, he has that kind of personality that makes it all part of the show – he even mocks his own ‘side show’ and reaffirms to himself that "my job is to sing".
He continued to provide the crowd with witty anecdotes and during the occasional silence he would break it with a comment like ‘drop a f**king pin in here’ having the audience in fits of laughter again.
During his song “Lights”, when he may have fluffed up, he blames Ryan Keen’s presence for putting him off playing. “Now you’re here I can’t play anymore’. He has personality aplenty.
Antics aside though, lets get to the real scene of this Sam Bradley show.
His voice resonates throughout the whole venue, and has a real passionate and soulful sound. He has fun with his songs and is a really personable singer. He can to and fro from being the professional musician to the comic who admonishes his own frolicking.
This man can play the guitar and has a set of vocals that would equal any established blues and soul singer. By his own admission he enjoys what he does and watching him lose himself in his lyrics and music is moving. However, just as you think he’s seriously settling into the song, he throws in a facial expression, joke or funny jig to keep the crowd on their toes.
Sam deserves greater recognition. His vocal range is wide, he has husky tones to his voice and can project his vocals far. He is a fantastic singer and songwriter – using a wide variety of subjects for his lyrics - as well as a great showman and these two combined make for a great show.
You can tell Sam has been touring for the past four years - he is quietly confident on stage but also humble. He knows he needs to portray his music and style, but gaining an insight into his personality is instrumental in becoming a fan. And win fans at Preston he did.
Although it was an intimate venue, with a small crowd in attendance, mainly students, the atmosphere was very respectful and they were there to listen and watch the performances.
If you haven’t seen Sam live, it is a must. You will leave the gig feeling fulfilled and satisfied and full of love and admiration for him and his music. This was my second time seeing him, and I cannot wait for the next. I have fallen for his music hook, line and I am sinking right down deep to the bottom of the ocean…
It’s not easy performing to an audience who are mainly there to see someone else but Sam did more than a great job! Sam has joined the talented Ryan Keen to travel up and down the UK for his ‘Room For Light’ tour (with extra support from the equally talented Joel Baker). His set was a great combination of upbeat songs and ballads with the crowd especially loving the title track from his upcoming EP Not Your Kind (dropping digitally on iTunes on the 20th May) and the strong vocals of Go Back.
I stole a quick glance over to the few loyal supporters of Sam in the room, who happily mouthed the words to fan favourite Too Far Gone and cheered when Sam sang the compulsory swear word as his opening to Lights.
Sam’s sister Grace Lindsey joined Sam on stage to perform Only Human, which was co-written by their mum Lee Lindsey, and it really showed off both their vocal talents. Sam left the stage after a 7 song set with the whole audience loving his music. This was further proved after the gig when a great number of new fans found their way to his merch table.
I look forward to seeing Sam (and Ryan and Joel..) again on their UK tour, on the 22nd April, in Norwich.
Special thank you for Nicole for sharing her fabulous photos.

Entering the venue, I was struck by how small, but interesting the room was. Cinema seats and a stage spotlighted showing off acoustic and electric guitars gave me the confidence that this show was going to be one of a kind and different to any gig I have been to before.
As soon as Sam Bradley entered the stage, everyone clapped and cheered, and there was a few laughs at the way Sam was awkwardly talking to the crowd whilst setting up. A few friendly and slapstick jokes later he was ready to perform his first song. I was shocked! The man who was awkwardly walking around the stage, laughing to himself had the most powerful and soulful voice! Strumming his guitar and stamping his feet to the beat, then I could see the people in the row in front of me nodding their heads along to Sam and his powerful voice.
In between songs, Sam was very entertaining, supplying us with a kind of slapstick humour – Joking with the audience and telling us how he spent time in America and the background to some of his songs. He then performed a song called “Little Sister”, which he told us was about his cousin, not his sister. The song was very emotional and his voice poured emotion too, infact in every song he played poured emotion. But Little Sister stood out most to me. I really enjoyed Sam’s set not just because of his great music, but his personality too which as a whole made a great show and I recommend anyone who likes acoustic music to check Sam out!
