It was good to be back at Notting Hill Arts Club which is a great venue for intimate gigs. Tonight it was packed and the audience was much larger than Sam Bradley’s previous show there this year.  Even though he was not headlining ‘TV Nights’ a lot were here just to see Sam (I know, I checked with the door).

There was no denying that Sam Bradley’s tour of the US earlier this year has given him more confidence in his performances. Last night’s show at Notting Hill Arts Club was testimony to that.

As I entered the club the unmistakable moody opening bars of ‘Lights’ filled the room and the audience was riveted to his performance, a pause in the song due to forgotten lyrics brought a little humour as his mum came to his rescue!  Sam explained to the audience that his set had a theme and that was ‘about feeling… love and passion… experience and fire…It’s about the Euros’.  In short, his support of England and football.  Odds at 12/1 mean it’s a long shot but it’s nice he’s patriotic.

In reference to his theme, his next song ‘Science Prevents Me’ was, according to the man, about not believing. Perhaps he hoped that by cheering “Come on England” before ‘Not your kind’ might bring them some much needed luck. I couldn’t detect the football theme in this song unless the disappointment conveyed in the song parallels what the nation will be feeling if England doesn’t win (fingers, toes & legs all crossed though).

I had never heard Sam perform ‘That’s How Strong My Love Is’ live and it was executed beautifully tonight. Although he didn’t pen this song, his performance was intense and soulful.  It’s always fun to see him perform ‘Details’ and it’s usually prefaced with an anecdote, tonight – carrying on the theme, he professed his love of football (you don’t say!) but not of the yob culture that is often associated with football fanaticism. His authoritative singing of remorseful lyrics should serve as a warning about such violence.

The set concluded with fan-favourites ‘Little Sister’ and ‘Go Back’ and the audience soaked up his oft gritty yet mellifluous vocals. Like a dutiful son, Sam thanked his mum and was gracious in his thanks to all that came out tonight. His worry that people wouldn’t turn up tonight was unfounded. He should really take his own advice and believe in his musical abilities and appeal.

Hi,

"I wasn't planning on playing a semi promoted show which is why its short notice... however my Mother convinced me that it would be a good idea as she is in town. Its an early show with doors at 7pm and show start 7:30pm sharp. I pulled a favor to get this slot. I don't think it usually exits.

As it is so early I'm going to need your help. Please tell anyone you can. Help me invite them via phone, SMS, email or this group. I need your help in creating an audience here in London!!
Thank you for all the support"

The venue for tonight’s performance was situated in London’s trendy Notting Hill. The Arts Club was somewhat rudimentary but served as an excellent backdrop for showcasing this singer’s gradually exuberant performance. He started off with ‘Little Sister’ to the intimate crowd where after a few minutes he settled into a nice groove as his confidence grew. This was followed by ‘Details’ which Bradley explained he had penned whilst in Nashville and had spun a yarn to the crowd there that he had spent time in prison – which I suppose was appropriate given the anecdotal nature of country music. ‘Passport’ followed this and this was where Bradley lost his footing and flubbed the words. I would say I was disappointed as this is my favourite of his songs (a reminder of the reviewer’s misspent youth) but in true Bradley-style, his charisma and light-hearted humour erased any awkwardness. It is this quality and easy rapport that Bradley has with his audience that explains why the singer has such a solid following. Next followed the real gem of the evening; Marcus Foster and his sister Grace Lindsey joined him to sing ‘People Get Ready’. This song was a perfect fusion of blues, early jazz and gospel (think New Orleans), where some of the lyrics were reminiscent of Bob Marley’s ‘One Love’. Grace Lindsey’s voice floored me. Quite simply it is stunning - and blended perfectly with Foster’s gravelly tone and Bradley’s crisper twang. I’d love to hear more from her in the coming year. Once Foster left the stage after the trio’s performance, the Bradley/Lindsey siblings covered the country song ‘Money in the Bank’ which was a fun tribute to what I assume was the music they grew up on (their mother is Country Singer Lee Lindsey). Bradley then sang his most mainstream but no less delectable number – ‘Woman You Crazy’ to the now larger dancing crowd.
Bradley concluded his set with ‘Go Back’ which nicely rounded the performance off. Bradley’s set was excellent although he was inexplicably nervous at the start. The guy has shedloads of talent as a singer/songwriter who oozes charisma and charm on the stage and is both humble and friendly when accepting well-deserved praise. I wish him every success in his forthcoming US tour with Marcus Foster. If you don’t add going to see these two musicians to your bucket list, you’re a fool!

Date:  28 February

AGE 18 +

7pm-2am, £8
(£6 with flyer, go to Facebook and like No Quarter)

Eyes On Film, Born Blonde, Juan Zelada, Sam Bradley and special guests live plus Maz (Communion) and TV Nights DJ on the decks.
Currently dividing his time between Vancouver and London, this will be Sam Bradley's only London show. A contemporary of the likes of Marcus Fosters and Robert Pattinson, he has had a song on the Twilight films and fan clubs across the world. A truly wonderful meshing of soul, folk and rock.

TV Nights' one-time resident Juan Zelada came to the UK with just his guitar on his back. His enigmatic talent made him one of the most talked-about names on the scene, receiving a songwriting awards from a certain Paul McCartney. Recently picked up by Decca Records, he has just released his debut album.
A throwback to the trippy Britpop of the likes of the Verve and the Stone Roses and feted by the likes of NME and Zane Lowe, this is Born Blonde's only London show before the launch of their album on Mercury Recs in April.
Managed by the same stable that brought you The Libertines and The Enemy, Eyes on Film play songs that are gloriously scuzzy and capture the distorted thrill of prime time indie and the incessant jackhammer of dirty electronics, a thrilling combination!
