It was a quiet Monday night crowd that Sam Bradley performed to but by the end of his set he had everyone in a lively mood.

During slower songs such as ‘She Moves Me’ the audience stood in silence with their full attention on Sam’s strong clear vocals.

Sam was on great form with his playful anecdotes between songs, making the crowd relax, smile and laugh along with him. 

Many feet tapped and heads swayed to the beat of ‘Woman You Crazy’ and ‘Go Back’ and he left the stage to enthusiastic applause.

A roomful of inebriated Glaswegians is always lively. So imagine how rowdy a Glaswegian hen party is. Anyone who knows anything about Sam Bradley could instantly see the possibilities for hilarity when he’s put in a room with a hen party and he really did deliver! He interrupted their celebrations and invited the bride-to-be onstage to sing to her, to cheers from her friends. Luckily nearly everyone got Sam’s sense of humour when he serenaded her with Woman You Crazy.

Sam was his usual energetic, edgy, intense and hilarious self, meaning anyone who didn’t know who he was looked nervous and unsure whether to laugh while fans were laughing and enjoying the bonus comedy with the fantastic music. Some of the songs might be fun but that doesn’t detract from the power of his voice. In fact, the jokes in between numbers only accentuate how good Sam is as a musician. He gets a room going, with laughter, but mostly with awe when he lets loose and sings something like 'Lights'. All round, he’s a brilliantly unique performer.

There's no doubt that Sam leaves his audience wanting more and vowing to go back to see him play again as soon as they can. Surely there’s no greater compliment or testimony than that.

The Nice ‘n Sleazy’s venue downstairs was an intimate room with plenty of space for an ample crowd.  The place filled up pretty quickly and it soon became clear that tonight’s audience were going to be energetic, vocal and that there would be no room for ballads on this set list. The audience were talkative and the place was buzzing especially with the addition of a hen party ,who sat at the back of the room, yet made their presence clear from the onset.

From the get go, after introducing himself as Sam Bradley with a spot on his chest, Sam drew the audience in and what better way to engage an audience but to invite the hen up to the stage for an extra special rendition of ‘Woman You Crazy’.

The males in the room were particularly amused and entertained by both Sam’s escapades and tales of what inspired him to write ‘Passport’ and everyone thoroughly  enjoyed the lyrics of ‘Soho Whores’,  joining  Sam in a chorus of “Don’t tell the wife”.

In between songs Sam was hilarious as usual, even treating us to a few bars of R Kelly’s “Bump N’ Grind” proving that he has great... ahem...’moves’.   He kept the crowd riveted, laughing and singing along for the whole time he was on stage and had them more than geared up for the headline act, Ryan Keen, with the cries of “I say Ryan Keen, you say Sam Bradley”  10/10 for marketing! 

It was evident by the end of the set that the cheers in the room proved that we’d all thoroughly enjoyed Sam’s performance and would have welcomed more.

Collectively between us we’ve attended 10 gigs of Sam’s over the last 16 months and we both agreed that tonight’s was by far the best we’ve seen from Sam yet; not only for his musical talent but also for his skill and ability to capture the audience’s attention and maintain it throughout his set.  Newcastle and Glasgow were two very different gigs and Sam delivered perfectly on each occasion.  We cannot wait for the EP release in May and are certain that if Sam’s reception on this tour is anything to go by, he will be a well deserved headlining act in the UK in no time.

Unconventional best sums up last night. From the set list delivered on a paper plate to his self-reprimanding humour, Sam Bradley entertains.


SET LIST

From the moment he opened with 'Science Prevents Me' the charisma, charm and banter started immediately.  From trying to beckon the crowd forward, to his witty remarks during his set and reference to himself as a ‘Southern fairy’, the Preston crowd was quickly won over.  Laughing along, quite uncontrollably, and then settling back down to be mesmerised by Sam’s powerful vocals and strong stage presence.




There were problems with his tuner, commotions back stage (literally clash and banging behind the curtains!), but nothing swayed Sam. Even though he is quite hesitant before he tells the crowd a story, he has that kind of personality that makes it all part of the show – he even mocks his own ‘side show’ and reaffirms to himself that "my job is to sing".

He continued to provide the crowd with witty anecdotes and during the occasional silence he would break it with a comment like ‘drop a f**king pin in here’ having the audience in fits of laughter again.

During his song “Lights”, when he may have fluffed up, he blames Ryan Keen’s presence for putting him off playing.  “Now you’re here I can’t play anymore’.  He has personality aplenty.

Antics aside though, lets get to the real scene of this Sam Bradley show.

His voice resonates throughout the whole venue, and has a real passionate and soulful sound.  He has fun with his songs and is a really personable singer.  He can to and fro from being the professional musician to the comic who admonishes his own frolicking.

This man can play the guitar and has a set of vocals that would equal any established blues and soul singer.  By his own admission he enjoys what he does and watching him lose himself in his lyrics and music is moving. However, just as you think he’s seriously settling into the song, he throws in a facial expression, joke or funny jig to keep the crowd on their toes.

Sam deserves greater recognition.  His vocal range is wide, he has husky tones to his voice and can project his vocals far.  He is a fantastic singer and songwriter – using a wide variety of subjects for his lyrics - as well as a great showman and these two combined make for a great show.

You can tell Sam has been touring for the past four years - he is quietly confident on stage but also humble. He knows he needs to portray his music and style, but gaining an insight into his personality is instrumental in becoming a fan. And win fans at Preston he did.

Although it was an intimate venue, with a small crowd in attendance, mainly students, the atmosphere was very respectful and they were there to listen and watch the performances.

If you haven’t seen Sam live, it is a must.  You will leave the gig feeling fulfilled and satisfied and full of love and admiration for him and his music.  This was my second time seeing him, and I cannot wait for the next.  I have fallen for his music hook, line and I am sinking right down deep to the bottom of the ocean…
