Sam Bradley Photos & Review - Compound Grill, Phoenix, AZ 4/3/12

Sam began the night with the 8pm set.  (He mentioned the mac-n-chesse was tasty, but kinda stuck in his throat.  Oops!  Though a little later in the set when handed a shot of Jameson’s he noted they go together so well.  *Heavy sarcasm*)  Throughout his set, Sam gave anecdotes regarding the songs.  During his song Details, he missed a line, reword with his voice, and then tried again.  The effect?  Hilarious!  Perfect comedic timing!  His story for Passport had everyone – well, except for the young girls in front cause they just couldn’t properly understand – in stitches.  Such a great mental image…being so young, 19, and dating a cougar, 45.  Awesome.  And so not right.

In Woman You Crazy, he got the crowd clapping along…only to then stop them saying, “Wait. Stop. I don’t do time.”  It was obvious that the small crowd garnered more of an intimate feel and gave Sam more opportunities to tell his stories, but also he noted a funny thing about playing on stage at The Compound, which I can’t imagine any guest there would have considered.  He said, “You know what the weirdest thing is?  Wait, 2nd weirdest thing cause flying donkeys are just weird.  I’ve seen Shrek.  But weird is playing while people are eating.  That’s just weird cause all you hear is clink, scrape, slurp.”  Okay, he actually made the sounds but you get the idea.  I never thought of that before, but once he mentioned it, all I could think of was Kevin Kline doing dinner theater in an old movie.  And then when Sam added he felt like he should be coming around playing at each table, well, I just lost it.

But outside of all the jokes, stories, and hilarity of his set; his music was superb.  Being an amazing entertainer, he drew people in with his stories and then proceeded to lay his heart on the stage.  Belting out “Woman You Crazy” came across so strong.  And “Not Your Kind” was stunningly beautiful.  I loved the reverb of his vocals on “That’s How Strong My Love Is.”  The tenor of his voice live captivates your soul and had clearly done so for all the patrons last evening.  I had the pleasure of seeing him last year with his band, but solo?  He’s first rate.
